By Zoila Palma: Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has sent a letter to Google urging the company not to change the Gulf of Mexico’s name to the Gulf of America, as ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump, USA Today reports.
In a press conference Thursday, Sheinbaum explained that the U.S. cannot unilaterally rename the body of water shared with Cuba and Mexico, citing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
She emphasized that any name change would only apply within 12 nautical miles of a country’s coastline.
Sheinbaum also humorously suggested that the U.S. could be renamed “Mexican America,” referencing a 1607 map. She requested that Google display the map of “Mexican America” when users search for it.
Google has not yet responded to the request.
The company previously stated it would update its maps to reflect name changes only once official government sources, such as the Geographic Names Information System, are updated.
