International News: Mexico’s President threatens Tariff retaliation against U.S. over Trump’s border demands

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has threatened to retaliate with tariffs of her own in response to President-elect Trump’s proposal to impose a 25% tax on Mexican imports unless Mexico halts drug trafficking.

Sheinbaum called the issue a U.S. problem and warned that tariffs could escalate, harming businesses on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, The Hill reports.

President Sheinbaum emphasized the negative economic impact of such tariffs, saying they would lead to inflation and job losses in both countries. However, Sheinbaum expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with Trump, stating that communication is the best path for resolving issues.

Trump’s tariff threat, announced on Monday, aims to pressure Mexico, Canada, and China to address border security and fentanyl exports to the U.S.

He has vowed to impose tariffs of 25% on Mexican goods, 10% on Chinese imports, and additional taxes on Canadian products.

Sheinbaum also noted Mexico’s efforts to curb migrant caravans, which she said no longer reach the U.S. border.
