By Zoila Palma: At a massive rally in Mexico City on Sunday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed confidence that the threat of U.S. tariffs on Mexican imports had been avoided for now.
According to AFP, Sheinbaum’s remarks followed a recent agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexico, granting a one-month delay on the threatened 25% tariffs.
Sheinbaum told the 350,000-strong crowd that she was “optimistic” about the future of trade relations with the U.S. but stressed that Mexico would not compromise its sovereignty. She had originally planned the rally to announce Mexico’s countermeasures in case Trump moved forward with the tariffs, which would impact 80% of Mexican exports to the U.S.
Trump, in announcing the temporary relief, praised his “very good” relationship with Sheinbaum. The tariff threat had caused concern in U.S. markets, with economists warning that tariffs would hurt both countries’ economies.
Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s commitment to fighting illegal drugs, like fentanyl, while urging the U.S. to follow through on its pledge to control arms trafficking into Mexico. She remained hopeful that dialogue and mutual respect would guide the future of U.S.-Mexico relations, adding that any future challenges would be met with swift action.
Sheinbaum also expressed optimism that tariffs would not be imposed when new trade measures take effect in April, citing the USMCA agreement that covers most products between the two nations.
