By Zoila Palma:  Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has condemned the deaths of three Mexican nationals in U.S. immigration custody this year, stating that such incidents “can’t be happening.”

Sheinbaum specifically referenced the case of 19-year-old Royer Perez Jimenez, who died at a detention facility in Florida earlier this week.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the young man was found unresponsive in his cell and the death is being treated as a presumed suicide, pending investigation.

“Nonetheless, we want a full investigation,” Sheinbaum said.

CBS reports that President Sheinbaum also pointed to two other deaths involving Mexican nationals in custody, including 34-year-old Heber Sanchez Domínguez, who died in January at a Georgia facility after being detained for driving without a license, and a 48-year-old man who died in March.

Mexican officials have described the incidents as increasingly unacceptable and signaled that diplomatic and legal measures will be pursued to defend the rights of citizens abroad.
