By Zoila Palma:  Hurricane Polo remains a major hurricane as it approaches the Baja California Peninsula, with life-threatening winds and flash flooding expected across portions of Baja California Sur and Sonora.

As of 5:00 a.m. MST, Polo was located about 110 miles (175 km) southwest of Cabo San Lazaro, Mexico, moving north-northeast at 10 mph (17 km/h). The system is expected to turn northeast later today and move inland along the coast of Baja California Sur this afternoon or early evening.

Polo is packing maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185 km/h), with higher gusts, making it a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Forecasters expect Polo to remain near major hurricane strength as it reaches Baja California Sur before weakening somewhat while moving into southern Sonora late tonight or early Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Major Hurricane Nolo is passing southwest of the main Hawaiian Islands with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 km/h), making it a Category 4 hurricane. Nolo was located about 565 miles (910 km) south-southeast of French Frigate Shoals and was moving west-northwest at 12 mph (19 km/h).

Forecasters say Nolo could strengthen into a Category 5 hurricane later today, although gradual weakening is expected to begin tonight. The system is forecast to remain well south and southwest of the main Hawaiian Islands but could approach the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the eastern Pacific, Tropical Storm Rachel was located about 250 miles (405 km) southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 km/h).

Rachel is forecast to strengthen and become a hurricane by mid-week, although its center is expected to remain well offshore.
