By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico’s National Guard shot and killed two Colombians and wounded 4 others in an incident near Tecate, close to the U.S. border.
According to AP, the Defense Department reported that the shooting occurred on Saturday after a patrol spotted two trucks allegedly involved in migrant smuggling.
It remains unclear if the Colombians were migrants; however, one survivor was handed over to immigration officials, indicating they may have been.
This marks the second deadly incident involving military forces and migrants in over a month, following a shooting in Chiapas on October 1 that killed 6 migrants, including minors.
The National Guard claimed their patrol came under fire before returning fire on one truck, resulting in the deaths.
No injuries were reported among the guardsmen.
Critics question the military’s role in law enforcement, particularly given the rising death toll in such confrontations, with all casualties on one side.
Three National Guard officers involved in the incident have been suspended from duty.
The military has increasingly taken on law enforcement roles in Mexico, raising concerns about their effectiveness and training in civilian matters.
