By Zoila Palma: The Mexican government has announced a new strategy to tackle the seasonal influx of sargassum seaweed, which is expected to affect major tourist destinations along the Yucatán Peninsula and Caribbean coast, Fox reports.
As part of the Sargassum Response Strategy, efforts will focus on detecting, containing, and collecting the seaweed at nearly four dozen beaches, including popular spots like Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.
The seaweed, which washes ashore between April and October, has become a growing issue due to climate change.
It can negatively impact tourism and marine ecosystems, though experts say it is generally not harmful to humans.
The government’s plan includes preparation, detection, containment, and collection phases, with barriers and personnel ready for the upcoming season.
While some marine species benefit from the seaweed, its foul odor and unsightly appearance make it a challenge for coastal communities.
