By Zoila Palma: Mexico’s government has announced it will delay approval of proposed tariff increases on nearly 1,500 products from China and other Asian countries while it holds discussions with trading partners and considers adjustments to the plan, Reuters report.
The proposal, sent to Congress in early September by President Claudia Sheinbaum, would raise tariffs by up to 50% on items including cars, textiles, plastics, steel, and other goods. Analysts suggested the move was partly intended to address pressure from the United States.
China, Mexico’s second-largest trading partner, has criticized the proposal, warning that it could undermine investor confidence and that it would take “necessary measures” to protect its interests.
Other affected countries include South Korea, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey, as the tariffs target nations with which Mexico has no trade agreements.
Sheinbaum said her government is reviewing potential changes, emphasizing consultations with other countries to adapt the proposal before sending it to Congress.
Morena Party leaders in the Chamber of Deputies confirmed that the tariffs would not be approved in their current form and would likely need to be softened, with decisions postponed until the end of November.
Any changes could affect the 2026 government budget, as the Finance Ministry projected the tariffs would generate $3.76 billion.
Under the current draft, tariffs on light vehicles would jump from 15%-20% to 50%, while auto parts could rise to 10%-50% from zero-35%.
