International News: Mexico to restrict Southern cattle movement amid Screwworm outbreak

Posted: Tuesday, May 13, 2025. 11:18 am CST.

By Zoila Palma:  Mexico will tighten cattle movement from its southern region to contain the spread of screwworm, a deadly livestock pest recently detected in the area, Agriculture Minister Julio Berdegué announced today.

According to Reuters, Minister Berdegué ruled out closing the border to Central American cattle but said full eradication of the pest will take time.

The U.S. has already suspended cattle imports from Mexico due to the outbreak.

Screwworms can kill livestock within weeks by infesting animals with flesh-eating maggots.

Mexico and the U.S. reached an agreement last month on measures to control the pest’s spread.
