By Zoila Palma: Mexico has begun construction on a $51 million sterile fly production facility in the south of the country to help combat a growing screwworm outbreak that has impacted cattle exports to the U.S.
The plant, a joint project with the United States, will produce 100 million sterile screwworm flies per week by mid-2026, Reuters report.
Releasing sterile flies is a proven method for suppressing the pest, which threatens livestock by laying maggots that burrow into the skin.
The U.S. is contributing $21 million to the project, while Mexico is covering the remaining $30 million.
After screwworm cases began moving northward in Mexico, the U.S. temporarily closed its southern border to certain livestock imports on May 11.
A phased reopening began Monday, starting with Douglas, Arizona.
The U.S. also plans to open its own sterile fly facility in Hidalgo County, Texas.
