By Zoila Palma: Mexico will impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods in response to the 25% tariffs President Donald Trump placed on Mexican imports, AP reports.
President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the specific products targeted will be revealed on Sunday in Mexico City, signaling a potential de-escalation of the trade war.
Unlike China and Canada, which have already imposed tariffs, Mexico held off but had a plan ready since January. Sheinbaum criticized the U.S. decision, calling the tariffs unjustified and harmful to both nations.
Starting Tuesday, U.S. tariffs of 25% on Canadian and Mexican imports took effect, with Canadian energy products taxed at 10%. Sheinbaum rejected accusations from the White House that Mexican drug traffickers were behind the issue, defending her administration’s efforts against drug cartels.
She emphasized that the tariffs are not intended to escalate tensions but warned of the economic damage they could cause, urging a more cooperative approach to avoid harming businesses and job creation in both countries.
