By Zoila Palma: Mexico announced Wednesday it will sharply raise tariffs on automobiles from China and several other countries to 50%, in what officials described as a move to protect domestic jobs and industry.
The new measures, part of a sweeping overhaul of import levies covering textiles, steel, toys, motorcycles, and other goods, are expected to affect more than $52 billion in imports, Reuters report.
Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the tariffs, which currently stand at 20% for Chinese cars, would be raised “to the maximum level allowed” under World Trade Organization rules.
The plan, which still requires congressional approval, will target imports from nations without free trade agreements with Mexico, including China, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey.
Officials estimate the measures will safeguard about 325,000 manufacturing jobs at risk from what Ebrard described as cars entering Mexico “below reference prices.”
China, meanwhile, criticized the move, urging Mexico to cooperate in global trade recovery while vowing to “safeguard its own rights and interests.”
Analysts say the tariff overhaul reflects both domestic economic concerns and pressure from the United States, Mexico’s top trade partner.
Washington has pushed Latin American countries to limit economic ties with Beijing, and experts suggest Mexico’s policy is aimed at appeasing U.S. demands while protecting its own industrial base.
