By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Tuesday that Mexico would not object to President Trump’s plan requiring asylum seekers at the U.S. southwestern border to wait in Mexico until their cases are heard.

While she did not endorse the controversial “Remain in Mexico” policy, Sheinbaum described accepting noncitizen asylum seekers as a humanitarian gesture and emphasized Mexico’s role in repatriating them to their home countries, LA Times report.

Sheinbaum, who took office in October, adopted a conciliatory tone toward Trump’s executive orders, many of which mirror policies from his first term.

She stressed that while Mexico would defend its sovereignty, it must avoid confrontation and work collaboratively with the U.S. on issues like immigration and drug trafficking.

On Trump’s proposed tariffs on Mexican imports, Sheinbaum urged calm and said her government would engage in dialogue with the U.S. to address concerns.

She also highlighted Mexico’s efforts to reduce illegal immigration, boasting of record detentions and reduced migrant caravans.

Mexico’s cooperation with Trump’s asylum plan marks a shift from the pressure applied during his first term but comes with hopes for financial support in handling repatriations.

Sheinbaum also brushed off Trump’s plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico, joking that it would remain the Gulf of Mexico for Mexico and the world.
