International News: Mexico threatens Legal Action against U.S. gunmakers over Cartel violence

By Zoila Palma:  Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, warned U.S. gunmakers on Friday that they could face new legal action if the U.S. designates Mexican drug cartels as terrorist groups.

According to CBS, the Mexican President said the U.S. Justice Department has acknowledged that 74% of weapons used by criminal groups in Mexico originate from the U.S.

Sheinbaum suggested that U.S. gunmakers could be charged with “complicity” in cartel violence.

This comes after reports that U.S. firearms are smuggled into Mexico, with networks purchasing weapons across the U.S. and shipping them south.

Sheinbaum also criticized the U.S. government for accusing Mexico of ties to cartels, pointing instead to U.S. gun stores selling weapons to criminal groups.

Mexico has filed a lawsuit against U.S. arms manufacturers, seeking $10 billion in damages.

 Sheinbaum has also launched a weapons buyback campaign within Mexico to curb street violence.

Tensions between the U.S. and Mexico have been high following the threat of U.S. tariffs on Mexican goods over drug smuggling.
