International News: Mexico tests app for migrants to alert relatives of detention in U.S.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico is testing a new cellphone app that allows migrants to alert their relatives and local consulates if they are about to be detained by U.S. immigration authorities.

The app, described as a “panic button,” sends notifications to chosen contacts and the nearest Mexican consulate when activated, AP reports.

This initiative comes in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s promises of mass deportations.

Mexico’s Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente said the app is performing well in early trials and is expected to be fully launched in January.

The government has also increased consular support and established a 24/7 call center to assist migrants.

Mexico estimates there are 11.5 million Mexican migrants in the U.S., with 4.8 million lacking legal status.
