By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that Mexico has temporarily paused oil shipments to Cuba, describing the move as part of normal fluctuations in supply and emphasizing it was a sovereign decision, not the result of pressure from the United States.
Sheinbaum responded to questions about whether state oil company Pemex had halted shipments amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to isolate Cuba, though U.S. officials have not publicly called on Mexico to stop the oil flow.
But, President Sheinbaum said Pemex makes its own contractual decisions with Cuba and that suspensions are made when necessary.
Her comments come as Trump intensifies pressure on Havana, which remains under strict U.S. economic sanctions, and as Cuba faces a deepening energy and economic crisis, NPR reports.
The island has relied heavily on oil shipments from allies such as Mexico, Russia, and previously Venezuela. While Sheinbaum said Mexico would continue to show solidarity with Cuba, she did not specify what form that support would take.
