By Zoila Palma: Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for U.S. users on its maps, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced.
The Mexican President criticized the tech giant for ignoring requests to reverse the change.
The move follows an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump in January to adopt the new name, claiming U.S. dominance in the region.
Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to formalize the change for federal agencies, BBC reports.
Mexico argues the U.S. has no authority to rename the entire gulf, which is shared by Mexico, the U.S., and Cuba. Sheinbaum said her government only wants the U.S. to respect its own territorial boundaries.
Google stated the renaming reflects U.S. government sources and only affects U.S. users. In other regions, the map displays both names.
