By Zoila Palma: Today, Mexico’s government announced that it has transferred 37 suspected members of major drug cartels to the United States, as pressure from the Trump administration intensifies over efforts to combat criminal networks accused of trafficking drugs across the border.
Mexican Security Minister Omar García Harfuch described the group as “high impact criminals” who posed a “real threat to the country’s security,” posting images and video of the operation on social media.
This latest transfer brings the total number of cartel figures handed over to U.S. authorities in the past year to 92 individuals, CBS reports.
According to García Harfuch, the detainees were flown aboard multiple aircraft to several U.S. cities, including Washington, Houston, New York, San Antonio, and San Diego, where they are expected to face federal charges. Under an agreement with the U.S. Justice Department, Mexican officials said prosecutors in the United States agreed not to seek the death penalty against the suspects, addressing a longstanding legal issue in bilateral law-enforcement cooperation.
The individuals transferred are believed to be associated with powerful criminal groups including the Sinaloa Cartel, Jalisco New Generation Cartel, and the Beltrán-Leyva organization, among others, and are accused of a range of offenses linked to international drug trafficking.
