By Zoila Palma:  Mexico has reported its first human death from H5N1 avian influenza, a three-year-old girl from Coahuila state.

The child, who was diagnosed with the virus on April 1, died from multiple organ failure after being hospitalized with respiratory issues.

The health ministry has tested 38 people who had close contact with her, all of whom tested negative for the virus, ABC reports.

Although H5N1 is primarily transmitted from birds to humans, the World Health Organization (WHO) notes that human-to-human transmission is rare.

Mexico’s health ministry has stated that the risk of further human infections is low.

This is the first confirmed human case of H5N1 in Mexico, following a 59-year-old man’s death from the H5N2 strain last year.
