By Zoila Palma: Mexico has announced a major hike in duties on low-value imports, raising the rate from 19 percent to 33.5 percent for shipments valued at $2,500 or less from countries without a free trade agreement, such as China.
The new tariffs, which take effect August 15, are expected to heavily impact fast-fashion e-commerce platforms like Shein and Temu, both of which rely on low-cost, cross-border shipping models.
Shipments from the U.S. to Mexico will be subject to lower rates—17 percent for goods between $50 and $117 in value, with items under $50 remaining duty-free, Yahoo reports.
The decision reflects Mexico’s broader strategy to curb the influx of cheap goods, especially as countries like the U.S. and EU move to close trade loopholes and tighten customs enforcement.
For Mexican consumers, this could mean higher prices on popular e-commerce platforms.
