By Zoila Palma: Mexico’s government is proposing a sweeping 50% tariff on Chinese imports as part of its 2026 budget, in a move aimed at shielding local manufacturers and responding to growing pressure from the United States.
The proposed duties, reported by Bloomberg, would apply to a wide range of goods including automobiles, textiles, and plastics.
China is one of Mexico’s largest trade partners, with over $51.4 billion in imports last year—nearly one-fifth of Mexico’s total.
The proposed tariff comes amid U.S. allegations that Mexico is being used as a backdoor for Chinese goods to enter the American market, circumventing U.S. tariffs.
Mexican officials have denied these claims, and President Claudia Sheinbaum declined to comment on the proposal during her Thursday press briefing.
Meanwhile, Mexico and the U.S. have extended an existing trade agreement for 90 days, maintaining a 25% tariff on Mexican exports rather than increasing it under the Trump administration’s tariff expansion strategy.
In a separate protectionist measure, Mexico has issued an immediate suspension on the import of finished footwear, citing damage to its domestic shoe industry caused by unfair foreign competition.
