By Zoila Palma: Today, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum appeared to step back from a proposal to shorten Mexico’s school year by more than a month due to extreme heat and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, following criticism from parents and educators across the country.
Sheinbaum said the proposal announced earlier by Education Secretary Mario Delgado was still under review and that no final decision had been made.
She acknowledged the country’s excitement over hosting World Cup matches but stressed that students’ instructional time also had to be considered, Reuters report.
The proposal, announced Thursday by Delgado on social media, would move the end of the academic year from July 15 to June 5, cutting roughly 40 days from the school calendar. Delgado said the measure was recommended by the National Council of Educational Authorities in response to a severe heat wave and the demands expected from the World Cup, which Mexico will co-host in June and July 2026.
Mexico’s National Union of Parent Associations strongly opposed the plan, arguing that children’s education should not be reduced because of a sporting event taking place in only a small number of municipalities. The group also noted that high temperatures are common in the country and usually begin to ease with the arrival of the rainy season in June.
Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara are scheduled to host 13 World Cup matches, with officials expecting hundreds of thousands of visitors.
