By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico has opened the door to receiving non-Mexican migrants deported by the United States, a shift from earlier statements by President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, AP reports.
During a press briefing, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Mexico is willing to collaborate with the U.S. if the U.S. cannot return migrants directly to their countries of origin.
While Sheinbaum did not provide specifics, she hinted that Mexico could negotiate the terms or seek compensation for transporting deportees to their home countries.
While Mexico is not in favor of mass deportations, Sheinbaum emphasized that the country has a plan to handle deportations if they occur.
This change in stance follows Trump’s promise to ramp up deportations, a move that could create logistical challenges and increase risks for migrants in northern Mexico, which already struggles with organized crime.
Mexico has previously accepted deportees from countries like Cuba and Venezuela, particularly when those nations refused flights from the U.S. Mexico also plans to host a regional meeting on immigration later this month.
