International News: Mexico meat industry pushes back against new Livestock rules due to Screwworm outbreak

By Zoila Palma:  Mexico’s meat industry is criticizing new government regulations on livestock movement and the mandatory use of ivermectin to combat a screwworm outbreak, warning the measures could disrupt a sector that generated $192 billion in 2024, Reuters report.

The Mexican meat chamber AMEG said the rules “jeopardize the supply chain” and stressed that the only proven method to eradicate screwworm is releasing sterile flies to reduce the parasite’s wild population.

The new requirement mandates that cattle receive ivermectin 72 hours before movement, supervised by officials from the International Regional Organization for Animal and Plant Health, a step, industry representatives say will significantly delay livestock transport.

The outbreak, which has spread north from Central America, prompted U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins to blame Mexico’s handling of cattle movement and fly trap monitoring. While the pest has not yet crossed into the U.S., the government has largely kept the border closed to Mexican cattle since May.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the challenge of restricting livestock movement and said new measures will be announced soon.

Meanwhile, Senasica continues regular monitoring and inspections to control the screwworm threat.
