By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called on Google to reconsider renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” for U.S. users, warning the country could file a civil suit if needed.
Google made the change following a decision by the Trump administration to rename the gulf, Reuters report.
Sheinbaum criticized the move, stating that the “Gulf of Mexico” name has long been internationally recognized. She also noted that the U.S. decree only applies within U.S. territorial waters, up to 22 nautical miles from the coast.
While users in Mexico still see the Gulf of Mexico on Google Maps, both names appear internationally.
President Sheinbaum emphasized that legal action is being considered if Google does not reverse the change. Google has not yet commented.
