By Zoila Palma: Today, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said that Mexico may look to new trade partners if U.S. tariffs on the country continue.

Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico would not “submit” to the tariffs and could shift trade alliances with Canada and other nations if necessary, Reuters report.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, which took effect Tuesday, have raised concerns about disrupting supply chains. Sheinbaum is scheduled to discuss the issue with Trump on Thursday.

In response to the tariffs, Sheinbaum has called for a rally in Mexico City’s Zocalo square on Sunday to announce retaliatory measures.

The tariffs are expected to heavily impact Mexico’s auto sector, which is a significant part of its economy. The Mexican peso strengthened slightly on Wednesday to 20.41 per U.S. dollar.
