By Zoila Palma: Mexico has extradited notorious drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero and 28 other cartel members to the United States, according to the US Department of Justice, CNN reports.
Caro Quintero, founder of the Guadalajara cartel, was implicated in the 1985 murder of DEA agent Enrique Camarena, a crime that sparked international outrage and was depicted in the Netflix series Narcos.
After serving 28 years for his role in Camarena’s murder, Caro Quintero was released on a technicality in 2013, but was recaptured in 2022 after a military operation. The DEA called his extradition a major victory for justice and the Camarena family.
The 29 extradited individuals are linked to major criminal organizations, including the Sinaloa Cartel, CJNG, and Los Zetas, and face charges related to drug trafficking and violence.
Among those extradited are Martin Sotelo, implicated in the 2022 murder of a sheriff, and high-ranking figures from the Sinaloa and Zetas cartels.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized that the extraditions mark a major step in the fight against violent cartels, with perpetrators set to face prosecution for their crimes in the US.
