By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum responded Tuesday to U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order that could label Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, AP reports.
Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s sovereignty, stating that the country would defend its independence while seeking coordination with the U.S. to fight drug cartels.
Trump’s order, signed Monday, highlights cartels and other Latin American criminal groups, claiming they threaten U.S. safety and regional stability.
While no specific Mexican cartels were named, the order could lead to a terrorism designation in the next two weeks.
Experts voiced concerns that this designation could complicate U.S. asylum processes and further escalate tensions. However, former DEA official Mike Vigil argued it would have limited impact on day-to-day anti-cartel operations.
The move comes amid rising cartel violence in northern Mexico, especially after the detention of Sinaloa cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
Many hope the U.S. designation could help bring justice to victims, such as Adrián LeBarón, whose daughter was killed in a 2019 massacre.
