International News: Mexico could be seeking how to send fuel to Cuba without being hit with U.S. tariffs

By Zoila Palma: Mexican officials are exploring options to deliver fuel to Cuba while avoiding potential tariffs threatened by the United States, Reuters report.

The discussions come as Cuba grapples with severe fuel shortages that have disrupted power, transportation, and basic services across the island after shipments from Venezuela dried up. Washington has warned countries that supply oil to Cuba could face tariffs under an executive order issued by President Donald Trump.

High-level Mexican representatives have been in talks with U.S. counterparts to clarify the scope of the tariff threat and determine whether a delivery mechanism could be established without triggering penalties, according to sources.

Despite the pressure from Washington, Mexico remains committed to assisting Havana, driven in part by ideological ties and domestic political expectations.

“Mexico doesn’t want tariffs imposed, but it is also firm in its policy of helping the Cuban people,” a source said.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has publicly stressed the need to avoid measures that could worsen Cuba’s crisis.

“Imposing tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba could trigger a far-reaching humanitarian crisis, directly affecting hospitals, food, and other basic services for the Cuban people,” she said, calling for respect for international law and sustained dialogue.
