International News: Mexico approves new tariffs on China as trade tensions intensify

By Zoila Palma:  Mexico’s Senate has approved a wide-ranging package of tariffs on more than 1,400 products, many of them imported from China, in a move the government says is aimed at strengthening domestic industries.

The levies, which take effect on 1 January 2026, will target goods including metals, automobiles, clothing and household appliances, BBC reports.

Countries without free trade agreements with Mexico – such as Thailand, India and Indonesia – will also be affected.

Beijing swiftly criticised the decision, warning that the measures would “substantially harm the interests of trading partners, including China.”

A spokesperson for China’s commerce ministry said an investigation into Mexico’s trade practices was under way and urged the Sheinbaum administration to reverse course.

The tensions come just as China signals plans to deepen its economic and technological ties across Latin America and the Caribbean, while Chinese carmakers such as BYD and MG continue to expand their manufacturing presence in Mexico.

The tariff overhaul also unfolds amid escalating pressure from Washington, where President Donald Trump has threatened a series of punitive duties on Mexican exports.
