By Zoila Palma: Captain Eduardo Barrón, a Mexican military officer, is using his music to challenge the controversial narco corrido genre, which glorifies cartel violence.
Performing under the name “Eddy Barrón,” he creates military-themed corridos celebrating the army’s values and honoring fallen soldiers, AP reports.
Unlike traditional narco corridos, which depict cartels as rebels, Barrón’s lyrics promote positive messages about military service, aiming to recruit youth and shift the narrative. His music, supported by the Mexican government, contrasts sharply with the violent glorification in popular songs that have fueled public concern.
Barrón, who began writing songs while serving, believes that corridos, a musical style born in the Mexican Revolution, should continue to reflect social issues but in a more positive light.
His songs, which feature military imagery, have gained significant attention and are part of a broader effort by the government to promote music that avoids glorifying violence.
While some critics argue that official efforts to reshape corridos may seem forced, Barrón is determined to reclaim the genre and steer it away from its violent associations.
The Mexican army plans to release more songs soon, aiming to change the perception of corridos and inspire positive social change.
