By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has voiced her disagreement with the U.S. government’s decision to revoke approval for 13 Mexican airline routes to the United States and suspend combined passenger and cargo flights from Mexico City’s Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA).
Speaking at her daily press briefing on Wednesday, Sheinbaum called the move a “unilateral action” and announced plans to request a meeting between Mexico’s foreign minister and the U.S. Secretary of State to review the decision.
She expressed optimism that both nations could reach a mutual understanding, Reuters report.
The dispute follows comments by U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who accused Mexico of “illegally canceling and freezing U.S. carrier flights for three years without consequences.”
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Mexico has been out of compliance with a bilateral aviation agreement since 2022 after rescinding U.S. carriers’ flight slots and requiring all-cargo airlines to relocate operations. President Sheinbaum said she will meet with Mexican airline representatives on Friday to gather their perspectives before engaging further with U.S. officials.
The decision has drawn concern from the aviation sector.
Viva Aerobus warned that the sudden cancellation will affect thousands of travelers ahead of the Día de los Muertos holiday weekend, disrupting planned routes from AIFA to major U.S. cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and New York.
Volaris noted the impact on its planned route to New Jersey, while the Mexican Air Pilots Union expressed deep concern that the measures could harm air connectivity, competitiveness, and jobs within Mexico’s aviation industry.
