By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has condemned U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s plans for mass deportations, insisting that immigrants should not be viewed as “criminals.”
In response to Trump’s promise to deport millions, many of them Mexican nationals, Sheinbaum reassured that Mexico has a plan in place to manage potential returnees.
Despite critics who claim Mexico is unprepared, Sheinbaum affirmed that her government is ready to assist deportees, particularly through strengthening its consular network in the U.S.
Mexico is also focused on emphasizing the vital contributions of Mexican immigrants to the U.S. economy, including the $60 billion sent back in remittances annually, LA Times reports.
While Trump has vowed to prioritize deporting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, many fear that his broader deportation plan could harm both the U.S. and Mexican economies.
Meanwhile, thousands of non-Mexican migrants, fearing the looming crackdown, are already heading toward the U.S. border, hoping to cross before Trump takes office.
