By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday highlighted what she called “compelling results” in Mexico’s ongoing efforts to crack down on powerful drug cartels and reduce migration northward, framing the progress as evidence that Mexico can handle its internal security challenges without foreign intervention, AP reports.
Her remarks come amid heightened tensions with the United States after President Donald Trump suggested American forces “will now start hitting land” in Mexico to target cartel operations following a controversial U.S. raid in Venezuela.
Sheinbaum has repeatedly sought to balance firmness on security with diplomatic cooperation with Washington.
In her daily press briefing, she pointed to indicators including a steep decline in homicides, fewer fentanyl seizures by U.S. authorities at the border, and a drop in migration flows as signs that joint efforts with the U.S. are bearing fruit.
She stressed that these advances demonstrate the effectiveness of cooperation rather than unilateral foreign action.
Sheinbaum also renewed her appeal for the United States to take stronger action on issues that feed cartel violence, particularly arms trafficking into Mexico and domestic drug consumption in the U.S.
