By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday celebrated the election of two politicians of Mexican descent as governors of California and Texas, describing their victories in the U.S. midterm elections as a recognition of the Mexican American community.
President Sheinbaum highlighted the victories of California Gov.-elect Xavier Becerra and Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa, noting that both have family ties to Mexico. She said their achievements were a source of pride for Mexicans and reflected the growing political representation of people of Mexican descent in the United States.
Becerra becomes the first Latino elected governor of California by popular vote, UPI reports.
He previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives, as California attorney general and as secretary of Health and Human Services under former President Joe Biden.
Meanwhile, Hinojosa, a civil rights attorney, becomes the first Hispanic woman elected governor of Texas. She defeated incumbent Republican Greg Abbott, ending more than three decades of Republican control of the state’s governorship.
Sheinbaum also reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to maintaining cooperation with the United States based on respect for Mexican sovereignty and continued trade dialogue.
