By Zoila Palma: Today, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Mexico will continue hosting Cuban doctors, even as other countries in the Americas have ended similar agreements under U.S. pressure.
Sheinbaum described the program as a bilateral arrangement that “helps Mexico a lot” and affirmed her commitment to uphold it.
The decision comes amid heightened U.S. efforts to isolate Cuba, including restrictions on oil imports and criticism of the doctor missions.
U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have labeled the deployments as “forced labor” and a “form of human trafficking.”
Several Latin American and Caribbean nations, such as Honduras and Jamaica, have responded by sending Cuban doctors home, AP reports.
Cuban medical personnel have historically provided care in rural and underserved regions across Latin America, including parts of Central America and the Amazon.
Sheinbaum emphasized their contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic and in areas where Mexican specialists are scarce, noting the difficulty of staffing remote regions without Cuban support.
