International News: Mexican officials demand investigation into US military-grade weapons being used by drug cartels

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico’s Foreign Relations Secretary Alicia Barcena has called for an investigation into how U.S. military-grade weapons are increasingly being found in the hands of Mexican drug cartels.

According to the Associated Press, Mexican authorities have found belt-fed machine guns, rocket launchers and grenades that are not sold for civilian use in the United States.

“The (Mexican) Defense Department has warned the United States about weapons entering Mexico that are for the exclusive use of the U.S. army,” Bárcena said.

“It is very urgent that an investigation into this be carried out,” Barcena added.

The Mexican army have reportedly seized 221 fully automatic machine guns, 56 grenade launchers and a dozen rocket launchers from drug cartels since late 2018.

In addition, the cartel openly brag about these weapons on social media.

Last June, Mexican authorities found 5 rocket launchers in the possession of the Jalisco New Generation cartel, 4 were seized from the rival Sinaloa cartel and 3 more seized from other cartels.

The U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar has since indicated that they are committed to working with Mexican authorities to look into this issue.
