By Zoila Palma:  Mayor Grecia Quiroz of Uruapan, Mexico, is living under heavy security nearly a year after her partner, former mayor Carlos Alberto Manzo, was gunned down during Day of the Dead celebrations.

Quiroz is now escorted by approximately 60 federally appointed bodyguards, armored vehicles, and military trucks as concerns over political violence and cartel activity continue to grip the region, AP reports.

Manzo gained national attention for his outspoken campaign against criminal groups and his confrontational approach to security. His assassination in a crowded public plaza shocked Mexico and intensified concerns about the dangers facing local leaders who challenge powerful criminal organizations.

Authorities have detained 34 people in connection with Manzo’s killing, including members of his security detail and individuals accused of leaking his movements or helping plan the assassination.

Prosecutors have described a possible conspiracy involving people close to the former mayor, while federal and state authorities have blamed the killing on the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
