By Zoila Palma: Teuchitlan Mayor Jose Murguia Santiago has been arrested in connection with a probe into an alleged drug cartel training camp in western Mexico, AFP reports.
Authorities suspect the Jalisco New Generation Cartel used a ranch in Jalisco state as a site to train gunmen, where forced recruits were tortured or killed if they resisted.
Human remains discovered at the site in March have led to widespread outrage, with some human rights groups labeling it an “extermination center.”
Murguia is being investigated for possible complicity or negligence. His arrest follows that of about a dozen others, including a local police chief and two officers. Jalisco leads Mexico in missing persons cases, with over 15,000 recorded.
