International News: Mexican farmers bring highways to standstill on Tuesday protesting low crop prices

By Zoila Palma:  Thousands of farmers across Mexico staged a massive national strike on Tuesday, blocking major roads and highways in at least 20 states to protest against low crop prices, lack of government support, and agricultural policies they say threaten rural livelihoods, Aristegui reports.

In Jalisco, traffic jams stretched for more than 23 kilometers as corn producers blocked the Ocotlán toll booth and the Atotonilco-La Barca interchange on the Guadalajara-Morelia Highway.

Demonstrators, led by Eraclio “El Yako” Rodríguez from Chihuahua, say the prices offered for their crops no longer cover production costs, forcing many into debt and loss.

Rodríguez, who heads the national movement, said the strike is being held in 17 to 20 states in response to the government’s proposed Water Law reform, which he called “highly retroactive.” He argued that the law undermines farmers’ existing rights and concessions to water access, while trade policies under the USMCA have flooded Mexico with imported grains and seeds, undermining domestic production. Farmers are demanding that key crops such as corn and wheat be excluded from the trade pact to protect Mexico’s food sovereignty.

The demonstrations brought highways and toll booths to a halt in states including Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Sinaloa, Guanajuato, and Michoacán.

In Tamaulipas, farmers blocked several major routes, including Mante-Valles and Matamoros-Reynosa, while others held peaceful sit-ins in Río Bravo.

In Michoacán and Guanajuato, protesters halted farm work and gathered on highways, dumping produce such as onions and tomatoes to illustrate how low prices make selling their goods unprofitable. Similar protests in Sinaloa and Mexico City drew thousands of participants, with farmers marching to government offices demanding urgent reforms.

Agriculture leaders say the mobilization is meant to “rescue the Mexican countryside,” noting that domestic corn production has dropped by 4% over the past decade, while imports have surged by more than 78%. They warned that without immediate government action, Mexico risks deepening its dependence on foreign food and further impoverishing its rural communities.
