By Zoila Palma:  Mexican farmers from Jalisco, Guanajuato, and Michoacán launched nationwide blockades today October 27, El Sol de Mexico reports.

Farmers are upset since the federal government failed to establish a guaranteed corn price of 7,200 pesos per ton.

From the early morning hours, producers assembled at highway toll boots as a meeting was held between the Commission of White Corn Producers of the Bajío and officials from the Ministry.

The demonstrations significantly affected traffic flow and logistics nationwide.

Organizers are also considering a national tractor march to Mexico City to demand fair corn prices, according to Álvaro López Ríos, leader of the National Union of Agricultural Workers (UNTA).

The planned demonstrations have gained support from producers across multiple states, including Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Hidalgo, Baja California, Nayarit, Durango, Querétaro, Tlaxcala, the State of Mexico, Chiapas, and Puebla.

López Ríos said the protest seeks not only a fair price for corn but also the exclusion of agricultural grains from the USMCA (T-MEC) trade agreement.

He criticized the dismantling of rural institutions over the past 15 years, which he said has left farmers without access to credit, insurance, or government support following the dissolution of Rural Finance.
