International News: Mexican farmers block key U.S. border bridge in protest over water reforms

By Zoila Palma:  On Monday, hundreds of Mexican farmworkers and truck drivers blocked the Zaragoza-Ysleta International Bridge—one of the busiest trade crossings between Mexico and the United States—as part of a widening national farmers’ strike.

The demonstration halted traffic at the Ciudad Juárez–El Paso corridor, a route through which roughly 70% of U.S.–Mexico trade flows, AFP reports.

The protest is part of a broader backlash against reforms to Mexico’s General Water Law proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The changes would prohibit the sale or transfer of water concession titles, a move farmers argue threatens their livelihoods.

“We don’t want them to monopolize the water and do whatever they want with the permits,” said farmer Gerardo Fierro during the blockade.

In Ciudad Juárez, agricultural workers also stormed customs offices as similar actions spread across 16 states.

Business leaders echoed concerns over the reforms, warning of major consequences for Mexico’s agricultural sector.
