By Zoila Palma: Mexican cartels, including the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation Cartels (CJNG), are reportedly using artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies to improve drug trafficking and criminal activities, according to a recent EU-funded study.
The report highlights that cartels employ “smart routing” to avoid checkpoints, calculate operation times, and even use facial recognition systems to enforce selective punishments.
Deepfake technology and voice imitation are reportedly used for blackmail, while social media platforms help recruit new members, The Latin Times report.
Experts warn that cartels are leveraging a wide range of digital tools, from encrypted communication systems to cryptocurrency operations and dark web activity.
Interpol linked the CJNG last year to a global financial fraud scheme utilizing AI and large language models to conduct sophisticated scams at low cost.
Mexican military investigations also revealed attempts by cartel-linked cybercriminals to infiltrate government networks, including those of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, the National Intelligence Center, and state-run oil company Pemex.
The report further highlights the cartels’ recruitment strategies on social media, targeting mostly young people aged 14 to 24 from low-income backgrounds.
Hundreds of accounts linked to the CJNG glorify criminal lifestyles, showcase weapons, and promote cartel culture, with some openly recruiting new operatives.
