By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican border states are preparing migrant shelters as President Donald Trump ramps up his deportation campaign, AP reports.
Tents were set up in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, where authorities are bracing for a potential surge in deportees.
The shelters are part of a larger plan to manage growing numbers of migrants, with some expected to be relocated to other parts of Mexico. Similar initiatives are underway in Nogales, Matamoros, and Piedras Negras.
While deportations on Tuesday were lower than average, shelters like Tijuana’s Movimiento Juventud 2000 are anticipating a potential crisis.
Trump’s shift in immigration policy, including the cancellation of the CBP One app and sending 1,500 troops to the border, has intensified concerns. Mexico is building nine shelters and providing humanitarian aid, including 2,000-peso cards for deportees.
Shelter directors, such as José María Garcia and Rev. Juan Fierro, are preparing for increased arrivals, though some worry about financial constraints.
Mexico’s government is also considering busing deportees to other parts of the country.
