By Zoila Palma: Meta is preparing to trial premium subscriptions for Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp in the coming months, marking its latest push into paid services.
The technology giant says the platforms’ core features will remain free, while subscribers would gain access to additional tools, including expanded artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, BBC reports.
Among the features being tested are new AI-powered products such as Vibes, a video generation app announced in September as part of the updated Meta AI app.
Meta also plans to integrate technology from Manus, a Chinese-founded AI firm it agreed to acquire in December for a reported $2bn, while continuing to offer Manus subscriptions to businesses.
Manus is known for developing AI “agents” designed to independently plan and complete complex tasks with minimal user input.
The move builds on Meta’s recent subscription experiments, including ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram and limits on link-sharing for non-paying users.
