Argentina found themselves in trouble after Egypt took a 2-0 lead with goals in the 15th and 67th minutes.
However, Cristian Romero sparked the comeback in the 79th minute before Messi delivered another unforgettable moment, scoring with his left foot in the 83rd minute after capitalizing on a defensive mistake.
The goal, his eighth of the tournament, sent Argentina supporters into celebration and created the loudest reaction heard at the Atlanta venue so far.
Enzo Fernández completed the comeback in stoppage time with a 93rd-minute goal, sealing Argentina’s place in the quarterfinals.
After the emotional win, Messi’s teammates lifted him into the air in celebration as Argentina advanced to face the winner of Switzerland and Colombia, with another opportunity to continue their pursuit of back-to-back World Cup titles.
