By Zoila Palma: Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from the country’s national team, bringing an end to an extraordinary international career that saw him lead Argentina to major titles and cement his status as one of the greatest players in football history.
Messi made the announcement today in a statement posted on Instagram, saying he reached the decision after carefully reflecting on the period since Argentina’s most recent final. “After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the National Team,” Messi said.
The 39-year-old captain said the decision was painful but acknowledged that he believes the time has come to step away from international football. “It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts deep down – but I understand that the time has come,” he said.
Messi also reflected on his commitment to Argentina throughout his career, emphasizing that he consistently gave everything for the national team jersey. “I swear to you that I always gave it my all – not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too,” he said.
He added that his goal was always to bring joy to Argentine supporters and make them proud through football.
Messi’s international career included Argentina’s historic triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well as victories in the 2021 and 2024 Copa América tournaments, marking a remarkable period of success for the national team.
