By Zoila Palma: A cow in Brazil has made agricultural history after selling for a staggering US$4.74 million at auction, earning her a Guinness World Record as the most expensive cow ever sold at auction.

Carina FIV do Kado, known simply as Carina, is a Nelore cow whose extraordinary value comes not from her meat, but from her exceptional genetics.

Carina had already established herself as one of Brazil’s most prized cattle before her record-breaking sale, Yahoo reports.

She won three consecutive national championship titles in some of the country’s most prestigious cattle competitions before retiring from competition at the age of three. Weighing more than 2,400 pounds, Carina is an impressive example of the Nelore breed, which dominates Brazil’s cattle industry.

Her genetics are what made Carina worth millions of dollars. Her owners can harvest her eggs and sell them to cattle breeders, with each egg reportedly valued at at least US$110,000.

The eggs can be implanted into surrogate cows in an effort to produce offspring with the same highly valued characteristics, potentially allowing breeders to generate award-winning cattle for years to come.

Carina’s record followed another Nelore cow, Mara, who sold for US$4.38 million in 2023. Both cows were bred by Casa Branca Agropastoril, a major name in Brazil’s elite Nelore cattle industry. Due to their extraordinary value, cattle such as Carina receive extensive veterinary care and are reportedly guarded around the clock.

Nelore cattle are prized for their ability to withstand Brazil’s climate, resist disease, reproduce efficiently, grow quickly and perform well without intensive feeding.
