By Zoila Palma: A growing measles outbreak in Texas has pushed the total number of U.S. cases to 523 in less than three months, marking the second-highest annual total in a decade.
Texas alone has confirmed 400 cases, with 41 hospitalizations and one death, NBC reports.
The outbreak, which began in January, has spread to New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
The virus originated in Gaines County, Texas, which has one of the state’s highest vaccine exemption rates. Most infections in Texas have been among unvaccinated individuals.
Nationally, about 92.7% of kindergarteners have received two doses of the MMR vaccine, but rates are lower among younger children.
Measles, a highly contagious virus, had been considered eliminated in the U.S. since 2000, though occasional outbreaks occur.
Texas officials are considering vaccinating infants as young as six months in response to the outbreak.
The CDC warns that measles spreads rapidly, infecting up to 90% of unvaccinated individuals who are exposed.
