By Zoila Palma: Mexican police have arrested Diego Rivera Navarro, mayor of the town of Tequila, Jalisco, in connection with an alleged multi-million-dollar extortion scheme involving major tequila producers and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
The arrest took place on Thursday as part of a nationwide crackdown known as “Operation Storm,” announced by Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch.
Federal officials allege that Navarro’s administration imposed property taxes more than 20 times the legal rate and issued fines exceeding 60 million pesos in exchange for withholding permits, Yahoo reports.
The government launched its intervention after receiving complaints from at least 10 companies, including tequila giant Becle, the parent company of Jose Cuervo, 1800 and Maestro Dobel.
Navarro was detained along with three senior municipal officials: the director of public security, the director of property and registry, and the director of public works.
Mexican officials confirmed that three mayors were arrested during the operation, though Navarro is the only one publicly named so far.
The raids were conducted by a joint task force involving the Mexican Navy, Attorney General’s Office, National Defense, Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, and the National Intelligence Center, under the direction of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
